The body and mind form a whole and cannot work independently from each other. The intricate relation between body and mind implies that physical symptoms can cause psychological symptoms and vice versa. This is one of the basic concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Other concepts such as Yin and Yang, the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water; the movement of energy called Qi (pronounce tchi); the meridians network through which the energy is finding its way and many other concepts have been used and developed for thousands of years.
The observation of the human body, its environment and the symptoms one might be experiencing, allows for a better understanding of the origin of an illness; the root of the problem.
This holistic approach goes much further than a simple management of the symptoms which would only bring temporarily relief to the patient. A deep understanding of the root of the problem is only possible when looking beyond the symptoms present at a point in time. One’ s relationship with the environment, strong emotions, the elements we are exposed to such as wind, cold, heat, dampness; the seasons in general; nutrition and much more; all can influence our health and play a role in the development of illnesses. Understanding these relationships will help the therapist in choosing the best treatment approach.
A state of health can only be reached if the underlying cause of an ailment has been treated. Such a healthy state implies that the body and mind are balanced and working in harmony. The root of the problem, the symptoms and any manifestation whether emotional of physical are symbolically found in my logo, through the image of the tree:
Zhen, what is real, the truth.
Biao, the symptoms, what is visible, the leaves of the tree.
Ben, the heart or root of the problem, the roots of the tree.
